Chapter 14

“What the fuck did you do, Greg?” Ricky’s voice blasted through the phone.

Greg rolled over in bed. Sweaty legs tangled in sweaty sheets. He’d tossed and turned throughout the morning since getting home from Carlos’s house, his lips still bruised from kissing the man and his head still spinning from the encounter with Sammy, the knowledge that Carlos was single now, and everything else.

Sleep had eluded him, and even beating off to relieve his tension had ended in more frustration. Too much going on in his brain. He’d tried pulling out a battery-operated toy to ease the pressure, only the vibrator was completely out of commission. He hadn’t used the thing in awhile. Was it possible for a sex toy to die of loneliness?

Greg’s mood was cloudy and dark, his body weighed a ton and he didn’t want to get out of bed. Especially now that he’d finally drifted off, only to be jerked awake by Ricky’s call and a whole lot of yelling.

“What the hell are you squawking about?” Greg kicked the sheets off. “I didn’t do anything.”

“Bullshit,” Ricky barked. “I just got done wrangling my brother and soon-to-be ex into the funny farm, and now I’ve got a message on my voicemail from Carlos saying he’s quitting, effective immediately.”

Sharp, icy guilt plunged into Greg’s chest. He had forgotten Carlos had said he’d quit. He’d figured they’d both cool off, they’d talk later....

He sat up in bed. “You think he’s serious?”

“You tell me. He said family issues, but I’m guessing that ain’t true. He said if we needed notice he’d give it, but he’d prefer to have it be effective immediately.” An impatient huff. “So I repeat. What did you do?”

Greg tensed when his feet hit the floor. Even in the summer the floors in his mother’s house were freezing. He had to get his own place. “So tell him we need notice. We have to find a replacement.” He stretched and yawned, naked and sporting uncomfortable morning wood—goddamn it—and searched around in a drawer for clean clothes, which were in short supply. He hadn’t done laundry and couldn’t stand to re-wear anything from the bars. Everything stank like an ashtray.

He pulled on a pair of jeans so uncomfortable he usually only wore them to go dancing at the clubs. He put the phone on speaker so he could stuff his junk inside, figuring the pain served him as some sort of penance for his fuckups, and threw on a muscle shirt.

“I’m waiting,” Ricky growled.

“I’ll go talk to him,” Greg said. “I’m getting dressed now.” Urgency pounded through his muscles. Anxiety. Pissed off as he might have been, he didn’t want Carlos to quit his job. Seeing Carlos every day, even if it was only that hour or so when Greg was wrapping up day shift and Carlos had come in to start work.

Greg shook his head. None of Greg’s damn concern who was over at Carlos’s house at seven in the morning. His gut clenched in response to the thought.
